Sony Now Makes a Portable Blu-ray Player. Why?

I'm sure there are 3.5 people out there who will put Sony's portable Blu-ray player to great use. It has a 9-inch screen, 4.5 hours of battery life, and 1080p output via HDMI. But for the rest of us, The Sony SX910 is an extremely niche-y, borderline unnecessary piece of tech.

99.99% of us would be better served with a tablet and a Netflix account, because Blu-ray's 1080p resolution is basically wasted on a screen so small. But I sort of get it. Hypothetically there is a Blu-ray enthusiast out there who also spends a lot of time on the road, and really doesn't want to waste their time obtaining digital or DVD copies of movies they already own.

The Portable Blu-ray player will be available this Spring.

Its an alright idea but price, and the fact that most of the world has blu-ray compatible laptops will keep a lot of people away.

I pretty much agree with you but I mean, that battery life is far from great so I know I'd definitely give buying it a miss! I can't see this doing particularly well either in all honesty.

back in the day there were portable dvd-players which could be powered by car, I never had one. That's sad.

Eh, personally this tech enthusiast will not be pursuing this item from Sony. For their sake, I hope someone does.

Kind of pointless.

Cool, but like you said a laptop would be a much better investment.

I'm following. As you say a Tablet PC should be a better option than this, no one carries blu-rays.

a stand alone product is great because it does not kill battery life on your laptop/ I phone/pad , so it has a use.

Watch BDs on a 9-inch screen? What's the point? Watching on a portable DVD player would yield the same result. BDs are for HD monitors and TVs, not for tiny screens.
