This slide was just presented by Stephen Elop and Nokia CFO, Timo Ihamuotila, at Nokia's Capital Markets Day. Although there's no date listed, it's clear that Symbian -- a "franchise" OS that Nokia will "harvest" -- will be wholly consumed by Windows Phone on Nokia devices just as soon as Nokia and Microsoft can complete the transition. It won't be immediate, but it seems like 2012 will be the year that Nokia pulls the cord on life support. Regardless of the actual date, who in their right minds would invest their development time or consumer dollars in a smartphone OS that has no future within the company? One more slide showing the post-Symbian reductions in R&D spending after the break.

i kinda like using symbian... but only because it isn't something completely mainstream I guess
Something good might come out of it... who knows.
symbian was ok, but now we have a lot of better mobile OS than symbian :)
when life closes a window it opens a door, something even better will come along. :D

This could be good if windows embraces symbian and makes changes to integrate the best of both worlds. If it's just straight consumption, which is where my money is, then boooooooooo.

I don't think Nokia will ever regain it's composure in the mobile market. It's too late, unless they come out with something totally revolutionary.

I don't consider myself a MS fanboi , more just too lazy to tinker with linux. Windows works so why "fix" it? Point being even I think MS needs to do same major work on Windows. Stop marketing 10 different OS's. Come up with ONE! That works everywhere. Stop doing a 32bit, 64bit, premium, professional, starter, ultimate. I understand Mobile systems (phones/tablets) require something a little lighter than a desktop/laptop but I just want my stuff to all talk together. EASILY! I see the whole Nokia/MS alliance as a good thing. And for the record I have a Android smart phone but it can be a pain to share files from it to my PS3 or PC and vice versa.
