Stolen iPhone Provokes Aussie Police to Fire Up the Helicopter to Track it by GPS

The iPhone was stolen from a hospital in Heidelberg, Melbourne, a 16 year old kid who pedalled away furiously on his BMX. It was another successful result for Apple's "Find My iPhone" service though, which allowed the police to track the kid using GPS from a helicopter.

While effective, it seems a bit excessive to use a helicopter to chase down a biker.

Aussie cops are even worse than Brit cops for disproportionate misuse of powers and equipment.

They'll go to any lengths to catch any "villains" they can get - like speeding motorists.

I'd make the b*stards ride bicycles.

That´s too much effort =P

Good thing they take stolen phones seriously. I'd much rather be murdered anyways.

I hope they send the phone owner a fuel bill. My friend was nearby when he saw a teenager running from a Walmart this morning, with a jacket full of loot. Dale chased him into the parking lot and detained him until security arrived. And the store still charged Dale full price for his own purchases. Cheapskates.

Aussie tax dollars at work lol. Seriously, what the hell was on the phone that was so important?

Waste of tax payers money for sure. But apparently it was in the area, so I guess it was an efficient waste of tax payers money :)

Yep they need to find better things to do than waste resources on trivial things like that...

Wow, we Americans can't track down Osama after 10 years, but the Aussies can track down an iphone lickety split...hmmm.

I bet they also got the president to do the paperwork after his arrest.

I think this is rad. I'd sure as hell want them doing this for me if I were in this situation.
