This Door Is Supposed To Save Lives During Earthquakes

When an Earthquake hits, what do you do? Typical Earthquake 101 tells you to run to the nearest doorway to protect yourself under the "strongest frame in the house". This bendable door is supposed to improve on that thinking.

However! Recent theories suggest that standing underneath a typical doorway is no better than being any where else during an earthquake. They now teach people to drop to the ground, go underneath a table and hold on. This concept door from student Younghwa Lee kind of mimics being underneath a table while being underneath a doorframe, which in a way, sorta blends the two Earthquake schools of thought together.

If you haven't been in an Earthquake before, well damn, you're lucky. Get some practice before 2012.

Looks like that thing would drop down and smack you in the back. Interesting invention though. Probably not useful anywhere except Cali.

Haha, whoooaaa. That's kind of trippy, and a neat idea. Though it seems like it'd be hard to install those doors everywhere. Guess you just gotta find a good table, eh? Nice post.

The door looks like it would break to anything heavier than 5 kilos falling on it...

That doesn't look like it'll save my life at all.

Im from Chile and we are kinda experts about earthquakes. get under a table and youre dead. if the door is too old... dead. The "triangle of life" have not been proven to work.

My advice is, open your eyes as wide as you can and get the hell out of the house. If youre on higher floors saty on a door so you can escape to either way in case one room collapses.

I doesnt matter if that door works perfectly. if it looks like a damn dead trap ppl wont buy it lol

Moggets said...

Surely that would break and bust your back.

Pretty funky, most people don't have a need for this though hahha =D

I think I'd just run straight outside of one instead of..under..a door. :)

I need one, cant be too careful.

Seems slightly impractical. But maybe it'll save some lives.

Applelove said...

Doesn't seem like it would be that beneficial. And if it does protect against earthquakes, it doesn't help any on police raids.

Seems useful but how many people will actually install those doors...

This designed is absolutely atrocious and ridiculous in theory. To make a door to withstand pressure from the weight being toppled on top of it it would have to be one of the heaviest doors in the world and or most expensive.

Waste of money IMHO

that actually looks like it works.

transformer door keeps you safe haha

Looks pretty stupid. I was always taught to go either underneath a table and hold on or into a bathtub. A door which folds just seems silly. How do you interact with it when you don't have an earthquake?

Joel C Anatoli said...

Seems likes its a danger rather than a safety feature!

looks more like this door will help take money away from fools who are terrified of e-quakes

Hehe i don't really think that door is a good idea!

given its supported enough, its likely that actually would work, but damn does it look flimsy

Mezzo Catorce said...

This door was actually not intended for earthquake safety. It was intended solely to haze new police and firefighter recruits.

"OKAY JIMMY, LAST BIT OF PRACTICE. THE PERP IS IN THERE WITH A HOSTAGE. KICK DOWN THE DOOR AND OPEN FIRE ON ANYTHING THAT MOVES."

Then the door pops him in the face as he kicks the bottom half down.

HILARIOUS.

this is cool, but unless i was worried about dying in an earthquake, i wouldn't get this at all.

That's a great idea!!

It's a pretty good idea, but like loads of other people have said, I'm sure it's more likely to spank you than save you.
