NASA caught Photoshopping an image of Saturn's moons. What were they trying to hide?

A conspiracy theorist noticed that an image in NASA's Astronomy Picture Of The Day had noticeable Photoshop brushstrokes in it, when you turned up the contrast. Is there a mysterious object hiding near Saturn's moons?

As quoted by Fox News, DominatorPS3 said: "More solid proof of NASA/ government cover-ups. And this is recent. You can do this yourself!!"

Dominator PS3's tell-all YouTube video has been taken down, allegedly because he received death threats. NASA's Emily Lakdawalla, who was responsible for the photoshopping, explained it over at Planetary.org:

What do you think? Did NASA really try to hide evidence of extraterrestrial life by photoshopping a picture — and then making that picture is Astronomy Picture Of The Day, just to confuse us further? It's so crazy, it might just be true!

I don't think so... I think there was something annoying/distracting behind the moon so they wanted to clean the picture up. Having the moon alone with Saturn as the backdrop has more impact than having other objects in the shot.

That is weird though...

They where problem just cleaning up the Image to make it look more appealing. And by that I mean erase the alien mother ship to keep everyone from freaking out about are new overlords.

If this crappy work is the level of NASA's photoshopping abilities, I wouldn't worry about them managing to hide anything.

Oh brother... I agree with ITS SHAUN'DRE. It's most likely just an aesthetic thing to make the picture look cleaner. Could have done a better job of blending it in, though.

isnt it obvious, nasa is trying to hide space cathulu.

It's simple. The images were taken in motion. That camera takes images one color channel at a time. They focused on the larger body, and as a result, the smaller body moved significantly during the time of the exposures. They combined the colors and pasted a single image of the moon, then cleaned up the mess.

Everyone who's conspiracy freaking about this knows shit-all about the probe in question, AND photography.

I bet there's aliens on that moon.
Nasa doesn't want us to see their cities..

I wonder if this is a common occurrence at NASA.

The Guru said...

Hmm don't quite get why they would do that. Maybe there is nothing and they want us to think there is.

lol, makes you wonder what else they are hiding.

You'd think they'd do a better job of trying to cover it up.

For this one, I'm gonna have to say that they were probably just cleaning it up, or someone in NASA really wanted this pic to be selected for picture of the day. Or they were running out of nice-looking pictures so they had to photoshop some.

About the image. I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to make space look "nicer". There has been a noticeable decrease in interest about the universe, and that needs to change to keep scientific advance going.
If NASA wanted to hide alien life, I don't think they would just photoshop an image and put it up, I think they would keep the picture away from the public altogether.

About cover-ups. There are too many governments and independents looking up to the stars. I find it unlikely that all these people would be in the dark, or able to keep their mouths shut.

Nah, Nasa would be lame to do that.

Because riots would start if there was proof of ETL.

Wow, that's pretty damn bad! Let's get some more conspiracy theories going on in here!

This can be easily solved by having a photoshopped version for wallpaper lovers, and an untouched version for science buffs.

To think of all thing's..."nasa photoshopping" if true blow's my mind, but it's kind of messed up now due to them being privatly owned and what not hmm!

Wow! That's quite disconcerting.

The truth is, we will most likely never know if intelligent life exists because if we learn that they in fact do, religious organizations will collapse and a huge chunk of humanity will go into chaos.

sad but true, just think about it. They will build your hopes up and up and never fulfill your thirst for knowledge.

that conspiracy theorist must be having a slow month.... as everyone else has been saying, clearly they just edited it to look better!

It's all fake anyway - worlds flat haha

I get the impression they were attempting to leave the focus on those two celestial bodies rather than have some other distracting object. But... yeah... bad shoopwork shouldn't be rewarded. I do better shyte than that and don't get paid jack squat

Atheos_Cirno said...

NASA is full of aliens.

Paladin-Bias said...

she took the time to comment... but not explain why it was shopped.... makes sense....

speculations won't really help at all.

Drackar is correct. Those are not stationary objects and these photos are taken over a period of time.
