Are Those Laser Keyboards Finally Usable When Embedded In an iPhone Case?

Short answer: Nope, still not.

If you have even a passing interest in tech you've seen these types of contraptions before. A laser is used to project a virtual keyboard onto a flat surface, while a camera detects the position of the typist's fingers to register keystrokes.

If it worked as awesome as it sounds, laser keyboards would be a fantastic tool for doing long form writing on a portable device. Particularly when it's integrated into a $180-$190 iPhone case. But the sad reality is that they're almost unusable for any kind of real work.

Not only is the lack of tactile feedback a huge stumbling block for touch typists, but the hardware used to track your finger motions isn't accurate enough for any kind of real speed.

I tried one of this laser keyboards on my PC, and it didn't worked properly ever. It's not that good as companies say.

Pretty cool tech

I'd be tempted to buy one in say, a decade time when they're fully developed but not right now, like you say they mustn't be the easiest things to use ever.

The idea is a good one, though like you said it has some major stumbling blocks. Furthermore I think they're just trying to reinvent the wheel with this. It would be much more effective, marketable, and possible cheaper if they used a super slim touch pad display.

Everything is better with lasers. Cats should have them as standard equipment.

yeah, I have been waiting for a REAL keyboard replacement for my phone for a long time! Even a roll out mini USB keyboard would be great. but I have yet to see anything like that.
